Your Own Eyes & Ears & Gut Instinct
We strongly recommend you visit several nursing homes (see Visiting / Questions to Ask the Nursing Home), several times — on different days (including weekends), at different times, to get a variety of experiences — to get a sense of the facility itself by actually being there. Given all the advice, suggestions and information you will have received, there is no better driver of your decision than your own eyes and ears.
You know your loved one best and ultimately your decision will be based on that knowledge and your judgment on the information you gather. There is no substitute for walking through a nursing home, listening to things, seeing things, smelling things (!) and getting a true feel for the type of facility it is. You need to trust your gut instinct. If you have done your research and considered all the important factors, making the right decision will be much easier.
