For-Profit vs Not-For-Profit Nursing Homes

Not every nursing home is the same when it comes to profitability status.  Not-for-profit nursing homes tend to have larger care-giving staff and fewer deficiencies (i.e. violations of mandated quality care measurements) noted in Federal surveys.  And that is why we typically would recommend not-for-profit over for-profit.  But this is just one factor and there are some good for-profit nursing homes and some bad not-for-profit nursing homes.

The Federal Nursing Home Compare (NHC) notes that “nursing homes can be run by for-profit corporations, non-profit corporations, religious affiliated organizations, or government entities.” NHC will tell you what type of entity a nursing home is.

We also recommend doing as much research as possible on your options and check out who owns them and what type of entities they are.
